Trinidad Motoring Reports

QUOTE :
"For persons coming to Trinidad I would advise a RHD vehicle with automatic transmission. The road conditions are reasonably good to very poor but I have travelled all over the country the past four years in a Honda Civic without major problems, just watch the potholes. The driving especially by taxidrivers and mini-buses is chaotic (they stop and go whenever they want) and the increasing congestion in and around Port of Spain and San Fernando is cause for concern. Luckily there is little aggression on the road and most people take the frustrations in their stride.
After liberalising the foreign exchange regulations in 1993, most well known car companies have established offices and service facilities in Port of Spain and San Fernando. From upscale Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Volvo to the more popular Japanese and Korean models are now available. Most foreign companies now provide 4x4 cars to their employees s.a. the Land Rover Discovery, Suzuki Vitara and Pajero. The T&T police force has recently been outfitted with Jeep Cherokees.
Tax-free purchase of vehicles is possible locally.
Lead-free gasoline is available in some petrol stations but not all, even though more and more are planned in the near future.
I hope this will offer an addition to your country database."
UNQUOTE (MaP Support Note for North Americans- the Suzuki "Vitara" = ± Suzuki Sidekick. The "Pajero" = ± what Mitsubishi call the Montero in the U.S.A.).
