Fire
Unless one has seen a vehicle catch fire and burn out, it can be difficult to envisage
it happening. The other thing which is surprising is just how quickly it can start, get
out of control, and engulf the whole vehicle. Within a few minutes your car can
become a heap of worthless scrap.
- Fires can start in several ways but the most common are through electrical faults (often
behind the dashboard) or carelessness, while : smoking, using cooking appliances,
refuelling and finally, manipulating fuel connections under the bonnet / hood of a vehicle
when the engine is still hot.
- Apart from exercising great care, our advice is to equip yourself with a good fire
extinguisher and to familiarise yourself, and your family, with where it's kept and how to
release, and operate it quickly. It wouldn't do any harm to try a few fire drills
(practices). Trying to read the small print on the extinguisher while the flames are
spreading, is too late!
