First aid
It is very important that every vehicle be equipped with a First Aid Kit and we would
also recommend that you acquaint yourself with basic First Aid skills. If you enrol
for a short course before you leave, you will probably never forget it, and you will
certainly not regret it. Courses are offered by the St. John Ambulance, and other
similar organizations, in Canada and the UK and they can also supply you with a First Aid
Kit. The St John Ambulance "Family" kit is presented in a convenient water
and dust-proof roll, with different pockets, and costs about $CDN 42. It currently
includes :
- For small wounds : 6 antiseptic cleansing towelettes, 3 Elastic adhesive pads (5
x 11 cm), 2 Elastic knuckle adhesive bandages (7.5 x 4 cm), 6 Adhesive strips (2.5 x 7.5
cm), 2 Adhesive dressings - TELFA pad (5 x 7.5 cm), 2 Adhesive fingertip bandages (3.5 x
5.5 cm).
- For medium wounds : 1 Pressure dressing bandage, 1 Sterile dressing (20 x 19 cm),
2 Antiseptic cleansing towelettes, 2 packs of 2 Gauze pads (10 x 10 cm).
- For large wounds : 2 Large dressings (20 x 19 cm), 1 Gauze roller bandage (self
adhering) (10 cm x 4.5 m).
- Additional Supplies : 1 Rescue blanket, 4 Triangular bandages, 2 Pairs large
latex gloves, 1 Pair scissors, 1 Pair tweezers, 8 safety pins, 1 Roll waterproof adhesive
tape (2.5 cm x 4.6 m), 12 Antiseptic cleansing towelettes,1 Foam splint padding (25 x 40
cm), 1 Sterile dressing (20 x 25 cm), 1 Patient information note pad - English/French, 1
Sharpened pencil, 1 St. John Ambulance Pocket Guide and 1 Window sticker.
- Items like insect-bite creams and other preparations can be added.
